Featured Brewery: Highland Brewing Co.

Highland Brewing Company began in the basement of Barley's Taproom in downtown Asheville, North Carolina, in 1994. It was founded by Oscar Wong, a Jamaican man of Chinese descent and an engineer by trade, and two brewers, one of whom is our brewmaster today. The brand was developed in honor of the Scots-Irish who settled in the Appalachian mountains of NC. Highland's beers are "a wee bit different." The brewers at Highland believe each beer has a personality – and personalities don't always fit into categories.

Beers to try:

  • Gaelic Ale - Highland's first beer is a deep amber-colored American ale, featuring a rich malty body. Cascade and Willamette hops add a complex hop flavor and aroma. This ale is exceptionally balanced between malty sweetness and delicate hop bitterness. It has a universal appeal and is Highland's workhorse, accounting for about half of its total production.
  • Lost Cove Kolsch - Warm days and summer adventures beckon for this crisp, dry and refreshing German-style Kolsch. Bready, elegant malts and floral hops shine in this easy-sipping brew. Rafters on the Nolichucky River can float by the legendary ghost town of Lost Cove, which provided secluded living during the Civil War for self-reliant families.
  • Highland Pilsner - A finely nuanced pilsner features German Hallertau Blanc hops and three other Hallertau region varietals. Saphir, Perle, and Hersbrucker hops add notes of stone fruit, pepper, and lush grass to the German pilsner malt body. Cold fermented with lager yeast for a crisp, dry finish.
